Shelton State Blows Out Bishop State; Extends Winning Streak to 10 Games
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 9 ranked Shelton State women's basketball team ran its winning streak to a season-high 10 games with a 91-48 win over Bishop State on Thursday night at the Umphrey Center.
Shelton State (19-3, 6-0 ACCC) is the only undefeated team in conference play as January comes to a close.
Shelton State shot 52 percent (38-for-73) from the floor in the win over the Wildcats. The Bucs shot 50 or percent or better in three of the four quarters, including a staggering 68.8 percent (11-for-16) in the 28-point third quarter. Shelton State made 56.8 percent (33-for-58) of its two-point field goals but only shot 46.1 percent (10-for-21) the foul line.
On defense, Shelton State held Bishop State to 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the floor and forced 20 turnovers (Bucs scored 27 points off those 20 turnovers). The Bucs also had eight steals.
K.K. Hobdy led all scorers with 17 points. She made 6-of-10 field goals and added six assists and seven rebounds.
Alana Obianozie scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She added six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Julie Nekolna added 13 points and six rebounds and CoCo Thomas chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.
After a slow start, the Bucs surged ahead with a 15-0 run to take a 21-8 lead after one quarter. Obianozie (8) and Nekolna (7) combined for 15 points in the first 10 minutes.
Shelton State scored 19 second quarter points to take a 39-18 lead into the locker room. Thomas and Davis both had four points in the quarter.
The Bucs opened the second half with a 10-0 run to increase its lead to 49-18. Hobdy and Obianozie had all 10 points in the early. Shelton scored 28 points in the quarter to take a 67-31 lead.
Mattie Grace Parrish and Bri Adams combined for 10 points in the final 10 minutes. Parrish scored all six of her points in the final quarter, while Adams added four.
Shelton State hosts Calhoun on Monday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
